Colorado MILE 2017 Race Results
What a weekend! We set out with great expectation and high hopes as anyone would I mean no one starts off a race weekend hoping to finish last, right? Well we didn’t but it wasn’t without its setbacks. One of the best benefits to running a naked (zero bodywork combination) you can see everything. This makes for quick check outs on all those, “is it leaking questions” and are all those connections tight? Through tech we go and to the riders meeting, Check. Now we wait… Wind was well blowing… Most of the meet the wind was constant 7-10+ mph cross of some kind, either a head cross or straight cross. Sunday the last day it was even in the 16 mph straight cross range. In Land Speed Racing (LSR) this is not good for any kind of major power runs, especially on a motorcycle. Ok let’s get to it!
First pass, low boost @9 psi or so. Clicked off a 203-mph half 233mph mile speed and noticed one thing quick, shut down was short and there were painted strips everywhere. These are very unforgiving in an extreme braking situation… note to self, Stay off the Paint!! I had already done the math before arriving so it wasn’t a blind move. I liken the surface and length to the first Texas Mile in Goliad, TX. Lots of fun times were had on that track! Back to it… after run check out, everything is perfect.
The Team on the ground consist of: Mark Tredway (M1), Mark Phillips (M2), Jim P and myself (Shane Stubbs). Our off-site members include Crystal Tredway and Nadia Stubbs. Off-site Tech support: Philip Koch (ECU) from Ms3pro, Walter Sprout (boost) from ECS performance. Plus, the rest of the families and friends that will be chipping in later… foreshadowing.
Second pass, @ 15 Psi. mind you this is a very big turbo! Clicked off 218 mph half 239mph mile speed. thought during breaking… yeah, you need to be popping up at the finish line to aid in deceleration. The significance of this pass? We just broke the Motorcycle track record running naked. While this is cool, it’s not why we came. During the push back to the trailer I’m already going over the pass in my head and I’m not happy. Bike felt soft when I clicked into 5th. After pass checkout under way… boom that didn’t take long… low comp on two cylinders. Quick team meeting not wanting to waste the trip we decide to drop the motor. As the rest of the team drops the motor I’m on the phone collecting parts. First with John Noonan @ Wossner Pistons in CA. It’s a good thing for me there’s a time change between us! John had to chase the UPS man while Alex finished up the Overnight parts request. How awesome is that? I love working with Racers they know what it’s like to be where we are right now. Second call Ms3pro John Black and Philip Koch got us some parts overnighted as well. Lastly and possibly the most comical… My wife, I had to walk her through pulling the cam caps of a prepped head to figure out if I had bench shimmed it yet… this was quite funny and thanks to her awesomeness and messengers live camera feed capabilities she could get everything else we needed from the lab boxed up and shipped same day shipping via united airlines the next morning. Everyone with us? It’s LATE!! Ok now to sleep.
Day Two: Collect parts and get to it… everything was sent to the hotel early am overnight except for the head and misc. parts. We had Ransom (world’s fastest Nos Bike guy) trying to locate some special spark plugs and do you know in the Denver and surrounding areas they only had THREE. Yes 3… while we had a few sets of others it was decided to try something different or at least that was the plan. NOT! Off to the big airport (DEN) to pick up the head because the other parts hadn’t made it in yet. Thank you to United Airlines that same day “Quick Pack” option is AWESOME! Everything arrived for pick up as promised great job BABY!!! And the nice lady from the hotel just called to say we got a box. Talk about timing! Back at the hotel and wouldn’t you know it for the first time both boxes are there WOOT! Thank you, John and Phillip, @ Ms3pro and John and Alex @ Wossner!! Headed to the race track to build this motor! Had the motor ready to slide back in the bike by 4 pm! One of the biggest differences between drag race bikes and LSR bikes, ALL the “OTHER” STUFF!!! This STUFF takes so long to put back together… New Motor is now Heat cycled Three times and it is just before Midnight Day Two WOOT…. Great Job Guys!! #tired, this also means Wendy’s drive through for supper.
Day Three Sunday the Last day. Morning heat cycles and lap top checks (via Ms3pro’s Philip and ESC’s Walter Sprout) to confirm the bike is in fact adjusted and HAPPY and ready to run.
Third pass @ 17 ish psi wind is kind of a head cross mix gusting to 15 mph. The man at the top end explains over Jays hand held radio at the line. I’m like Let’s do this “it’s a shake down right?” Prayers like every pass before, (Lord help me to stay whole and make good decisions in Jesus name!) Under way, bike feels perfect through the half and boom decent cross wind still could maintain line and tps position thru the mile marker. Popped up immediately @ the mile marker noticing pressure on my chest, that was a good pass I thought. Braking was much better to because I was way more aggressive earlier instead of waiting. Rounding the corner, I see off in the distance Greg and Jim clapping I was like cool that must have been a pretty good pass! Pulling up to the time slip tint Ryan the race director comes out with a big smile on his face now I’m even more confused I’m wondering how fast did we go?? I know we only asked our ams2000 for 17 psi and it’s always dead on the money so I know it couldn’t have been over 240’s. He asked as I pulled my helmet off how fast do you think you went? I was like I don’t know. 240’s and he explained we had just broke the overall track record @ 248 mph again still running naked. Our break down in speeds this pass 181 mph ¼, 223 mph ½, and 248 mph in the mile.
After run check out perfect, cool down and back in line we go.
*For those who don’t know, the only naked record we are after is the only one that matters to me. It’s the overall worlds fastest in the mile of which we are currently ranked and setting in the #2 spot (@248 on two tracks) to the late and great Bill Warner with his speed of 255 mph naked. I can tell you one thing for sure, he is making us earn it! (he also owns the overall worlds fastest mile with a speed of 296 mph and over a mile @ 311 mph.)
Back to work we go… M1, M2 and Jim got the bike lifted and the tire warmers on, fuels topped off and the ice tanks full. As far as Sundays go it’s getting late. Sundays are short race days. It’s time to make something happen. The wind is now crazy and we’ve been patient… Jay tells me it’s hovering around 10mph head cross and I’m like it’s not going to get any better let’s do it. At the line.
Fourth Pass @ 21 ish psi left decent considering the track wouldn’t hold the power if you just drop the clutch, already tired. Through third she’s pulling good now I’m excited! Click into 4th still tracking at shift point boom into 5th crazy cross wind and bike lifts had to roll out for about 1.4 ish seconds I’m upset hated to abort a good run… **We did hit 250 mph @ the ¾ mile marker… I popped up early on the run just before the stripe knowing we hadn’t reached our goal, no point in pushing shut down on a non-perfect pass. Here’s the pass by the numbers 188mph ¼ 230.5 mph ½ and 245.5 mph mile. **Although not totally satisfied with the overall pass the 230.5 mph half mile speed is the world’s fastest Half Mile Speed for a motorcycle running NAKED.
**Btw we do have excellent videos of all these passes plus more on our Facebook page for your viewing @TredwayStubbs Racing.
Thank you for reading and sharing in our adventures we look forward to the next meet! We are currently preparing for The Texas Mile. If weather permits we will be running with bodywork oh boy this should be fun!!
**Huge thank you to all our sponsors! These guys help us to dream big and go faster, use them when you think about “go fast” parts because it’s who we call!!
