The youngest world champion
Manuel Gonzalez is the youngest world champion in the history of motorcycling . Younger than Loris Capirossi who won the 125cc title at 17 but was born in April. Gonzalez is 17 and 25 days old. Born in Madrid on 4 August 2002, he lives in the Torrelodones district and is in the 4th year of the technical institute. He climbed for the first time on a 5-year mini bike. In 2017 he won the talent Cup in the CEV, while last year he made his debut in the world Supersport with a Yamaha, finishing on the podium at Magny Cours. The same track where today he celebrated with the Italian team ParkinGO Kawasaki who chose him a year ago.
The race was very good, a continuous phrasing of overtaking and counter-pass between the 3 drivers in contention for the title, in addition to Gonzalez, the outgoing world champion Ana Carrasco (Kawasaki) and the Dutch Scott Deroue (Kawasaki), in addition to the French Andy Verdoia (Yamaha). In the final sprint the Spanish won, with Gonzalez very happy in second place and Deroue third after marking the new track record. The Gallaratese Filippo Rovelli who started in the second row, did not start very well, failed to stay in contact with the group of treads due to mechanical problems and finished 17th, Tom Edwards unfortunately finished off the track on the second lap. For them there will be a chance to rebuild in Qatar on October 26th.
The Palmares of ParkinGO
For ParkinGO, a team founded by Gallarate entrepreneur Giuliano Rovelli, this is the second world title after the one won in 2011 in the Supersport 600 class with Chaz Davies. ParkinGO Kawasaki is also in the lead of the Championship for teams with 36 points ahead of Freudenberg KTM, the title will be awarded in Qatar.
Manuel Gonzalez declares, new champion of the Supersport 300 world:
“For me this season was almost perfect, I managed to win or get on the podium in almost every race, I have no words to define what I feel at this moment. First of all thanks to my family who made so many sacrifices for me and the Kawasaki ParkinGO team. Fortunately, the rain and the wind here at Magny Cours today came to a close”
Enthusiastic Giuliano Rovelli, Team Owner of ParkinGO Kawasaki:
“Today’s success is a very important confirmation of the work we have done in motorcycling over the years. Today, Manuel Gonzalez is the youngest rider in the history of motor speed, even younger than Loris Capirossi in 1990 whom I remember well. A year ago I saw him in action and since then I decided he would be on our team this year and 12 months later he is World Champion. For us it is a beautiful moment and we enjoy it to the full, I thank the team, the collaborators, our sponsors and the technical suppliers. Now only the last piece is missing, winning the team’s Cup in Qatar.”
